Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation
The goal of stroke rehabilitation is to help you relearn skills you lost when a stroke affected part of your brain. Stroke rehabilitation can help you regain independence and improve your quality of life. The severity of stroke complications and each person's ability to recover vary widely.
Head trauma varies in severity and the degree of symptoms following injury are different for every person and every accident. Each person's recovery journey is an individual experience.
Typical symptoms can include:
Light Sensitivity
Auditory Sensitivity
Headaches
Dizziness
Fatigue
Decreased Mental Clarity
Impaired Body Awareness
Clumsiness
Memory Deficits
Anxiety
Depression
Impaired Expressive (talking) and Receptive (understanding) Language.
One of the most important parts of supporting neurological healing following a head injury is supporting the return of "safety" within the nervous system. This is done by engaging the brain stem where the survival reflexes are located. Often during a traumatic event these survival reflexes are activated to survive the event and do not return to their un-activated state following the injury. This can be due to prolonged stress following the accident, toxins and/or poor integration before the event.
Our therapists understand recovery from a head injury is a physical, mental and emotional process. Progress at times can fluctuate and feel like walking up a downward moving escalator. Most often this is due to environmental factors and stressors which are inhibiting recovery. Therapists will educate each patient in decreasing stress and supporting stress/tension release throughout their daily tasks.
